Although the Christmas tree is up, its not looking overly festive in my kitchen yet. I guess that will come with Christmas day and the festive holiday when we get to indulge and be thankful for what we have.
I have started making some bookmarked festive food in advance though, such as Johanna's Chocolate Salami and Chocolate Panforte. I have other festive recipes that I want to make, but yesterday I was hit with a stinky cold and a chesty cough. So you can imagine the last thing I wanted to do is be in the kitchen sneezing over things, instead I had resigned myself in front of the TV.
But I have found some energy to sit in front of my computer and share some new stuff in my kitchen. Let me start with a disclaimer, this is not a sponsored blog post - I say this because I seem to have amassed a number of Merchant Gourmet products in my kitchen...carry on reading and you will see.
Firstly there are whole chestnuts. Its the festive season and chestnuts are must in every home.
I am planning on making Roasted Chestnut, Parsnip and Carrot Loaf and Savoury Chestnut, Rainbow Carrot and Lentil Cake. Funnily enough, over the weekend, I found another box of chestnuts that I picked up a early in the year and still in date.
Next we have some Quick Cook Polenta. We haven't had polenta for a while, one of my favourite dishes want to do is Tamale Bean Pie, but over the festive season I am planning on making some Polenta Bombs filled with winter vegetables and Savoury Mosaic Polenta Cake with vegetarian Black Pudding.
I am planning on having a fancy cheese board this year, so picked up some beetroot and three seed oat biscuits and charcoal and sesame wholemeal crackers. I have had charcoal crackers in the past and disliked them, but wanted to give them another try - also I think they would look good on the festive platter.
D picked up this jar of potted blue Stilton. He said the jar could be reused. He has been thinking a lot about our plastic consumption and has been making a concerted effort in reducing it whenever we can.
I picked up some pistachio nuts and wasabi peas. More nibbles and nuts to come!
Now onto some world food or ingredients. I saw this Smoky Spanish Style Grains and Rice on offer and thought i'd give it try. I also picked it up hoping it would inspire me to make something different for our lunch boxes as I must confess I am getting bored with the homemade pasta salads and sandwiches.
I was running low on Panko. I was glad to find some at a supermarket. I prefer using panko to dried breadcrumbs for my homemade vegetarian Scotch Eggs and Fishless Cakes.
On a recent trip to Bristol, we stopped at an Oriental supermarket. I picked up a bag of hot chili flavoured dried bean curd to snack on - think vegan jerky, and a packet of bean curd sheets - I remembered a recipe I had come across calling for it, but when I got home - as usual I could not remember from which cookbook, hopefully it will come to me in the next few days.
Many of the supermarkets this year were flogging American ingredients for Thanksgiving. I saw these Tortilla chips - one Fiery Hot Chilli and the Ranch Red Pepper and was tempted by them. I also wanted to see how different they were from the ones sold in the UK, plus I am a sucker for savoury crispy snacks. I must say, these were superior than those sold in the supermarket as they had more texture, bite and crunch. I also picked up two cans of Pumpkin Puree (not shown) that were reduced to 99p each and let me tell you that is a bargain.
I am sharing this post with Sherry Pickings for In My Kitchen series, it was started by Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. Celia has been a great source of inspiration to me from her Sourdough bread to her Beeswax Wrap. In My Kitchen Series is also a nice way to meet bloggers from around the world, as well as an opportunity to take a peek into other bloggers kitchen.
Pumpkin is definitely a Thanksgiving ingredient, but tortilla chips not so much. I hope you enjoy all your interesting Christmas treats!
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Thanks Mae.
DeleteI hope you'll soon feel better and I wish you and D a happy Christmas and New Year. Tortilla chips are a favorite here, the organic variety from Aldi.
ReplyDeleteThanks e.
Deletehi shaheen
ReplyDeletethanks for joining us at IMK this month. great to have you. yes i like panko crumbs too - so crisp aren't they? that pot of stilton looks wonderful, and so sensible to be able to re-use it. i am taking it very easy on the christmas front and not doing much at all. it is wonderful! hope you have a fab festive season. cheers sherry xx
Thanks Sherry.
DeleteNot in the mood yet! I should do like you and start making festive food. A chocolate salami would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to share the chocolate salami this week.
DeleteCan't go wrong with a cheese board, and those biscuits look so exquisite! I've also been hoarding nuts already like a squirrel, can't have enough for the festive season! Have you seen any nice new ideas for vegetarian Christmas dinner centre-pieces while looking at recipes? I need some new ideas... Are you planning to make anything with seitan this year?
ReplyDeleteThanks VegHog.
DeleteI am hoping to make a nutroast and seitan roast
but if I don't get round to making the seitan - there is always the Quorn roast from the supermarket.
We ate fresh roasted chestnuts last night...and it feels a lot more like Christmas now. Yay! I am sure sorry to hear you're under the weather! Feel better soon!!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed it is feeling like Christmas now.
DeleteSorry to hear you have a cold but chocolate salami and panforte sound like excellent gifts. I wish chestnuts were more a thing here but you don't see them around much. I like the sound of your cheeseboard - hope you like the charcoal crackers - they do look impressive on a cheeseboard and I think they are not all created equal. I rally love the look of both crackers. And I am like you - I buy something to make a recipe and forget it - or I buy something to go with something that needs using and I get to it and the ingredient needing using up has gone beyond help! Good luck feeling better and finding some christmas cheer!
ReplyDeleteThe chocolate salami worked out well, the panforte not so much which I was sad about, my fault not the recipe. I hope I like these charcoal crackers and agree not all are same, so heres hoping. I need to be a bit more disciplined when getting ingredients as its annoying when I find something that cost a few pounds and its out of date.
DeleteI love charcoal crackers - if you don't like the new ones, send them this way! I think I mainly like them for the colour rather than the flavour, but still. I only ever seem to eat pistachios at Christmas - is a seasonal thing, or do I just not eat enough pistachios?! Hope you find the recipe for the tofu sheets!
ReplyDeleteThanks Joey. I think you could do with more pistachios in your life throughout the year.
DeleteHi shaheen
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in the last 2018 IMK. Hasn’t this year flown by? Hope you have a marvellous festive season. See you in 2019! Cheers sherry xxx
Thanks Sherry. See you in 2019 too.
DeleteSo interesting, I have never seen those particular flavored chips in the supermarket here. Oddly enough, chestnuts are not common out here in N CA but I saw them everywhere when I lived on the East coast of the US. Have a wonderful holiday, that cheese spread sounds like it will be a winner.
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz. Perhaps the crisps were made for the export market. Have a good festive holiday too.
DeleteOoh, there look to be some tasty treats for your Christmas break Shaheen. I have been a bit obsessed with chestnuts this year. Such a delicious additional ingredient. And I really like the look of those charcoal crackers. Have fun
ReplyDeleteThanks Belinda.
DeleteYep, you're right, those charcoal crackers will look amazing on your cheese board. Polenta is a favourite so I was interested in the recipe for polenta bombs. Fun name too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Fiona.
DeleteShaheen, I hope you're over your cold by now. (I'm in the middle of one, yuck.) Wasabi Peas are sure to cure what ails you -- TV time and a bowl of Polenta, too. :) Take care and Happy Holidays! xo
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim. Yes much better. Hope you feel better soon too. Happy Holidays.
