I do not in any way have permission from the hubs to paint my cabinets. His response?
No na-na-no-no-no. NO. And no.
So you're telling me it's a no, then?
See, the hubby and my dad have this thing about real wood:
it's to be stained. Not painted; stained. And once you do paint, there's just no going back. Am I right?
Anywho, I love open kitchen shelving. Looove. And I love white dishes. Which I've been collecting.
And besides my beloved white dishes, I have thee amazing shelves o'
I'm not lying to you.
Badly organized, looks like someone hucked crap in there and slammed the doors on it, junk.
So, I have this cabinet, all by itself.
It's a loner, Dotty. A rebel.
And so I thought to myself: "self, just try out an open cabinet. See if you like it. Just try."
And so I did. Took those doors right off.
Got to the kitchen, rearranged some things,
and now we can certainly party with the Haitians.
(name that movie)
And I liked it. But I felt like it could be. . . more. It needed that little sumthin' sumthin'. And you just know a project isn't complete without molding in this house. I know you were surprised by that. You wouldn't have been more surprised if you woke up with your head sewn to the carpet, than you are right now.
I'm sorry. I am really into movie quotes today.
So, first things first:
I felt like it needed some new backing. Something fresh. New. And something to hide that giant gap my cabinet has.
Ah. V-groove.
You know, to kind of match the spice shelves on the opposite wall.
Traded in those maple shelves for some white bull-nosed MDF ones:
And. . . molding. Will there be molding?
Will I eat the rest of that pizza in the fridge for breakfast tomorrow?? Um, yeah.
Some paint, and then assembling dishes in there for the maximum earthquake damage potential,
and I'm callin' her done.
And maybe my phony plastic croissants and cheese are a little much.

I'm seeing a goblet rack to go underneath in this cabinet's future.

I'm totally diggin it, fake croissants and all...but ya know, I think it would look even better if it were all painted white. So if decide to accidentally paint it white, like in your sleep or something, you can totally tell your husband it was my fault! :)

I LOVE it!!! I'm totally not organized enough to have open cabinets... I try to be... but... it just doesn't work. I've thought seriously hard about painting our cabinets in our kitchen, but, since we live in a modular (Houses here on the coast are SOOO expensive!! Sheesh!) we have FAKE wood cabinets. So, if we WERE to paint them, there really is no going back. :-/ I'm not sure what to do. I wish I had someone more "remodelaholic" around here so I could get their opinion. I mean, it's not like we want to stay in this house forever... it's just a starter home, so we don't want to throw down a ton of money either. *sigh*

Omagah! The crown is the finishing touch. And poor anonymous, when you write exactly what you think, he must be tempted to respond. Amazing when we need / want a project we find one. This one is great.
Apparently we have the same cabinets, the same white appliances, the same husband and the same conversations.(I wish I had a baby girl in my kitchen). I could have written the first part of this post (but not as funny and I would not have come up with "Dottie"). The 2nd part? OMG. I LOVE it! That was not the moulding I would have guessed for that even though I should have and it looks amazing!!!!

Wow you and that crown molding..... I am with Finding Home. Let's see the whole kitchen now. Since I am not anonymous I have a couple of ideas to run past you. If you wanted more open cabinets that have the feel, but with doors then if your hubs would let you they can cut or you could cut the arch middle thing out of the cabinets and put in glass. And if you want to hide the shelf holes on the side of the open cabinet and make it all white....I saw a post long ago where this lady used contact paper to make all of her cabinets white inside and out. She was a renter and couldn't paint. It looked so good and I was amazed it was contact paper. I need you to be my neighbor. I could sew for you and you could cut wood for me!
My sister in law "stained" her cabinets black. Seriously. Took months. Myself, just slap on the paint. But she stained, then distressed. Maybe Dad and hubby would agree to staining them white. Of course there's that "months" thing. In the meantime, that looks great.
I was going to give you SO MANY props for having croissants ON HAND for display purposes.
But plastic ones are handy in case of a staging emergency.
Just don't let guests like me see them. I'd try to eat them anyway.
My dad's the same way about natural wood. He about had a heart attack when he saw what I did to my buffet!! He was pretty much speechless and told me not to paint the dresser in my room because it's an antique. Yes, it's an old dresser, but it's not worth anything unless I have the whole bedroom set. And even at that, it wouldn't be worth a whole lot, so I fugured, "WHY NOT??" and decided that I'm totally going to...and it's going to be RED, so he'll hate it even more. He's still into the peach and mint green colors...ICKY!!!!
I'm gearing up, but not until after I do my room, to do my kitchen cupboards that are the same color as yours!! I was talking to the nice lady at Lowes and she told me about a product that you can use to change the color of the stain (from light to anything darker) without having to sand it all first!! You just have to make sure your surfaces are clean as a whistle. I'm ANXIOUS to give it a test run on something to see how I like it. =)

My husband's dad is the same way. I've learned when he says stuff, just to nod politely and do whatever I was going to do in the first place.
Also, the color of your table and chairs is totally inspiring to me. I'm going to be building a floor to ceiling cupboard for our other bathroom, and that is completely and utterly the stain color I want it.
I am LOVING the open cabinet, especially with the v-board/beadboard/ultra-yummy-white-slats in the background! Your dishes are lovely, too. I'm more of the hide-it-so-you-don't-have-to-show-how-disorganized-you-are-sort, so this is mucho impressive.
We haven't announced it yet, but we are in the process of buying our first house, so I need to start taking notes...I want to be a DIY girl like you! First on my list is to get a drill. I totally have one of those wine glass racks for under the counter. Bought it new from a garage sale for nothing, its from pier one. Won't fit anywhere in my kitchen. Say the word and its yours!

A mess, a huge, big ol' mess.
Your kitchen is lovely, your open cabinet idea is excellent, and I too live with someone who doesn't want ANY wood painted (even the sashes on the windows!) I'm so TIRED of how limiting this is! Just found your blog through "I am Momma Hear Me Roar". My dad, and now fiance, have the same opinion as your husband about painting real wood. Good to know I am not the only one who has to deal with that issue.

Me again. I'm not a stalker, I promise. Just had to comment again. I also have a loner cabinet that lost her doors. I painted the back gray and added some vinyl in what my husband calls chain link fence pattern.
I love the molding you used.
Funny this thing men have with painting wood. Hubby always cringes when I see a picture of an older house with beautiful dark wood trim and stairs and say "wouldn't that look great painted white!" I like it, great job.
