A couple of weeks ago I started tackling one of my goals for the third quarter of the 2016 finish-a-long. I wanted to make myself a quilt from my collection of super pretty prints by Elizabeth Olwen and had originally planned on using the Morocco quilt pattern by Keera of Live Love Sew. I love this pattern, however when I saw how many steps and pieces were involved in making the blocks I decided I needed a simpler pattern.
I’ve been putting in a lot of overtime at work lately so I took a much needed day off and spent the day making some very simple quilt-as-you go blocks using strips of different widths. Simple improv sewing is very therapeutic!
I sewed strips randomly onto squares of batting (that I had cut from my batting scraps), added a bit of free-motion quilting to some of the strips and then trimmed each block to a 12.5″ square. Before sewing to the blocks together I added a pair of easy corner triangles to opposite corners of each block.
I basted the quilt with a second layer of batting and quilted all the layers together by stitching in the ditch between the blocks and along seam within each block. For the binding I used more of the solid I had used for the corners of the blocks.
I’m really happy to have finished this quilt. I love how the different collections work together and the heaviness the double batting gives it (It’s so thick and warm).
It’s a bit hard to see, but I added some free-motion quilting designs in three different coordinating threads.
For the backing I used a print from the Wildwood collection. I love this print so much I have bought some extra and am hoping to make myself a dress with it.
I’m linking up with Scraptastic Tuesday as this quilt made excellent use of my batting scraps and would make an excellent scrappy quilt if it was made from scrap fabric strips.
I’m still hoping to make the Morocco quilt one day but I’m so glad I changed my mind for this one. Sometimes simple is the best!

Love the Morocco pattern but it is relaxing to just play with scraps! Thanks for linking up to #scraptastictuesday
