Yesterday I was trying to decide on how I will be quilting the next section on Murrieta Stars and it got me thinking when looking at the big empty squares in between the stars – what to put in it and then I got to thinking while looking through my stencils that some were missing. A light bulb went off in my head – you know how that is – and I remembered where I saw them – years ago! yes years ago – and I had forgotten all about them.
Remember years ago when this ring binder of patterns was offered for how many $$ back in the 90’s? It was a month to month thing where you could get it for 12 months or something like that or quit when you wanted. I think I got it for 12 months. There were plastic templates and paper patterns – and stencils – or the stencils got in there from something else? who can tell – that was a long time ago!
Maybe someone else has this ring binder – “Best Loved Quilt Patterns” and knows if stencils were included too or if they got in my book from another source? They have been sitting in this book for years – I have used some of the patterns – back in the 90’s before rotary cutting became so popular ( or maybe I was late getting a rotary cutter LOL ) If they didn’t come with this book it came with something else that had the holes for a ring binder as they have them on the side.
Here are two of them – but I don’t think I quite like them in this – but I did put them with the other stencils for another time so I won’t loose track of them again – amazing how quilting supplies multiply and years later come back to be used.
The flower on the right is what I used in the corners of the first two borders but I kind of like the sunflower on the left – I wish I would have seen this one first and I would have used it instead for all of it – but I think I will use it for the block blocks in between the stars just because I like it and I think it suits the quilt. I will also have a grid in the area that the flower doesn’t cover.
I got this side marked and ready to quilt for last night and I will work more on marking another day –
For Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy I plan to finish this 4th star for Round We Go – it will be the 4th for October and I’m running late with it seeing as it is almost the end of October – I am trying to keep up with 4 a month. I am also linking to Cynthia at Quilting is More Fun than Patchwork .
One coat of varnish on the sewing table – several more to go! but it is a start – I hope to have the table ready to put the sewing machine on at the end of the week and then I will get to serious work practicing with it and learning all about it. I need to make a run to the closest dealer (90 miles I need to go jeans shopping too so can combine the trip) too and ask some questions, get an extension table for a level work space directly around the base of the machine, extra bobbins and maybe a quarter inch foot although the markings on the feet provided are pretty good.

I have some of my grandmother’s quilting stencils. I have never used a stencil for quilting but it is fun to see how your older stencils still work for your more recent project.
I don’t always use stencils some just use a grid but it is fun to use different designs now and then
Karen, There are no quilt stencils in the back of my book like yours. I love that you are combining the stencils with the grid.
you have the book too huh – I wonder where I got these that they have the little circles on the side to fit in a ring binder? must have been from another “club” glad I found them, I thought it was just one in it and surprised to find 2 circle patterns and 3 templates for a feather
It’s amazing what we stash away hoping someday we will find the right project for it. I love when grid work is added behind a stencil design as it really helps balance the quilting out. Looking forward to seeing one of your alternate blocks quilted.

I like using stencils for quilting. I do like your sunflower choice. I think I probably would have used the larger ones just because they filled the space. I wouldn’t dawn on me to fill in with a grid. What a great idea. Yes, my crafting supplies sometimes get forgotten too. I amaze myself with what I find sometimes.
I’m constantly amazed at what I find when I start looking ! I tend to have things stashed all over the house

Whew, what a bunch of busy days, so glad to be back. I just finished reading all the posts I missed and enjoyed everyone of them. Your quilting is so pretty as always and your stars will certainly making a beautiful quilt when all together. I got back yesterday just in time to cover all my pots of plants last night. The night before there was a light freeze and I could see some dark edges on my cannas , and the hibiscus was a little droopy, but with temps in the 80s today everything looks good and gives me some time to bring them in. I also have that notebook but no stencils. I have a bunch of stencils in two of Georgia Bonesteel’s books, and they have 3 holes in them for a binder. I enjoyed my sister and two brothers and can imagine how fun it is with all your siblings! Enjoy your slow stitching Sunday!
hope you are able to save your plants! I put the ferns back out on the porch today – back to 60/70’s daytime and mostly 40/50 for night again for next two weeks I think. I wonder why I got those stencils but can see why I put them in the ring binder seeing as they had holes in them to do it. glad you had a nice trip and visit with your siblings! always such fun

Hi Karen. I read your blog all the time, but so far haven’t commented. I also have those stencils, part of the set, two notebooks, one patterns on cardstock weight paper & the other is all plastic stencils. I enjoy keeping up with your work, your quilts are all beautifully done. Kathy

I decided to check my books, published 1991 by Oxmoor House. I remember it being pretty pricey, and later saw the book they produced from the sales of these. The second notebook has 6 feather stencils, the rest is plastic templates for the quilt patterns in the other notebook. Georgia Bonesteel also offered a series at the same time, and I picked up one pattern at one of the fabric stores in Ft Smith during this time published by Leisure Arts.

Yes, I live near Altus & Ozark. My daughter lives in Dover & works in Russellville. She has learned to quilt with a little coaching from me, as well as my oldest daughter doing the same. Fun watching them learn. I love hand quilting too. I’m a little older than you, next birthday starts with a 7. lol
